What a transmission really costs in 2026
Transmission work is the repair our owner-shops get the most questions about — and the one with the widest price spread. Here's what actually drives the number on the estimate.
Parts are the smaller half of the bill
A remanufactured unit for a common front-wheel-drive sedan runs roughly $1,800 to $3,000. For trucks, CVTs, and dual-clutch units it climbs quickly. New-from-dealer units can double that, which is why most shops quote remanufactured first.
Labor is where quotes diverge
Book time on a transmission replacement ranges from about 6 to 14 hours depending on whether the subframe or engine has to come out. At shop rates between $120 and $220 an hour, that alone explains a $1,000+ difference between two honest estimates.
Rebuild, replace, or repair
Not every failure needs a full unit. Valve bodies, solenoid packs, and torque converters fail on their own and cost a fraction to fix. Always ask which component failed and whether a targeted repair is viable before authorizing a replacement.
